MARCH MUSINGS

Seasonal stories and notable happenings from the team behind Ochre Botanical Studios.

Thank you for joining us here!

We’ve been spending some time reflecting on our favourite things about spring and feeling grateful for moments that bring us comfort, small glimmers of joy and calm. For me, focusing on what we can do, what we can control and noticing and feeling gratitude for how much nature gives and keeps on giving is hugely therapeutic.

March has very much provided opportunity for being in the garden where we’ve been gathering momentum sowing seeds, constructing a rainwater harvesting system for the polytunnel, potting up the dahlias and planning for this year. We’ve enjoyed the sunshine on our faces and noticing all of the change and growth around us. We’ve observed all the herbaceous perennials getting a huge growth spurt all of a sudden which is so joyful. The birds have been wonderfully loud and busy – I love to imagine what they’re saying. I now know the robin’s song instantly.

When we’ve thought about what we love most about spring, our favourite things included the light, being outside, our companions, colour palettes, anticipation and all of the specific botanicals, always: hellebores, fritillary, narcissi, scilla, quince, spirea, honeysuckle, tulip turkestancia, magnolia and muscari to name a few treasures that we’ve really appreciated in March.

Marion specifically mentioned emergence – the emergence of bulbs from the ground, seedlings emerging from the growing modules, the sun emerging a bit earlier in the day and the critters (including us) emerging from their cosy winter nests. I loved this description which really does encapsulate spring.

We enjoy all the meaningful connections that spring offers – there’s more light to notice things, more opportunity to be outside, more momentum and more interaction with people, animals and nature. I would be fibbing if I said I didn’t feel a bit of loneliness at times over winter.

Sophie’s special March moment was the arrival of Winnie – see below! Hello Winnie.

On the same day as the spring equinox, Ostara, it was also the Persian new year and Sarah celebrated at a friend’s house and reflected that celebrating a new year with spring and all the new life felt so right.

We’re grateful for the moments. What do you love most about spring?
