Seasonal stories and notable happenings from the team behind Ochre Botanical Studios.
Thank you for joining us here!
Each year, as winter lingers and the first whispers of spring begin to stir, we make our annual pilgrimage to Cambo Gardens. A tradition of sorts, a pause before the season sweeps us up once more. Cambo in February is a place of quiet magic, its woodland floors blanketed with snowdrops—small, resilient, and bright against the last of winter’s cold. It feels like a soft exhale, a gentle nod to the turning of the wheel, the final moments of stillness before everything awakens again.
For a few years now, we’ve gathered here with friends, a meeting of like-minded souls drawn to the same quiet beauty. Some years, we join Sarah from Simply by Arrangement on her snowdrop bowl arrangement classes. Other times, we find ourselves alongside Éva Németh, whose eye for storytelling through photography brings a whole new way of seeing. This year, we joined Eva’s snowdrop photography workshop, an opportunity to slow down even further, to look more closely; to truly see.
We wandered the gardens, seeking out the smallest details – the way the light filters through the petals, the way the flowers bend with the weight of the air. Inside the studio, we arranged them with reverence, capturing the essence of this fleeting moment before the season turns. There’s something about snowdrops that feels deeply symbolic; they are the first to brave the cold, to push through the frost, to remind us that winter does not last forever.
Photography has become such an important part of our work. So much of what we do is fleeting – arranging, growing, foraging, creating – but the ability to capture a moment exactly as we saw it, as we intended it to be, is invaluable. Whether it’s a bouquet, a hanging installation, or a tablescape just before guests arrive, we want to preserve the feeling, the atmosphere, the details that make it special.
Over the years, we’ve made it a priority to develop our own photography skills, not only for our floral work but also for the weddings we create for. We often carve out time at the end of a setup, just before leaving a venue, to document the space we’ve helped bring to life. These images become more than just records of our work; they are a way to tell the story, to share the fleeting beauty of each season, and to hold onto the moments that pass too quickly.
Beyond the practicalities, photography also deepens our connection to the seasons. It invites us to be present, to truly engage with what’s in front of us. The way light shifts through the year, the way each flower has its own rhythm and gesture—capturing these subtleties means tuning into nature more closely. It’s a practice in patience, in appreciation, in seeing beauty in the fleeting.
Now as we stand on the cusp of spring, this time feels precious. The work ahead will be ever moving—the flowers, the weddings, the growing season all waiting just around the corner. But for now, for just a little longer, we hold onto the quiet. We take one last deep breath before we step into the rush of what’s to come.
And with the arrival of spring, we have some exciting news. After a long time in the making, we’re preparing to launch our online shop! We’ll soon be offering a limited run of beautifully crafted, seasonal bouquets for delivery to selected Edinburgh postcodes, just in time for Mother’s Day.
If you’re looking for a special way to celebrate the mother figures in your life, our bouquets will be filled with the freshest spring flowers from our garden and other local growers. This is something we’ve been dreaming about for a while, and we can’t wait to share more details with you soon. Keep an eye out for updates on our website and Instagram!
Until next time…
